Untold Tails Exhibit
What an honor it is to have John's work featured at the American Saddlebred Museum within the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington!
This exhibit runs now through the end of 2025! If you are in the Lexington area, or want to plan a visit, we'd love it if you would make the American Saddlebred Museum's Untold Tails exhibit part of your trip!
Below is a brief write up from John Paul Battista, John’s grandson and a John L Baker Art committee member:
“Susie, Nanette, Renee, Lisa, Lillian, Shane, Leo and myself made the trip to Lexington. On Friday, we stopped at the Ark Encounter on the way, wow was it big. On Saturday we went to cousin Nick Rennekamp’s farm in Lagrange KY. He trains and sells Polo horses. He is down to 10 horses, at one time he had over 100. On Sunday we went to the Kentucky Horse Park then to the Museum that is on the same grounds. We stayed at an Airbnb on a working horse farm. I can’t remember who but one of the sister’s said “we get to stay on a horse farm” like they never lived on a horse farm, lol.
Pap’s paintings were the feature of their new exhibition “Untold Tails”. The exhibit was made up of newly acquired artifacts or artifacts that have been in their archives and they wanted to showcase. The curator, Johna, said Pap’s painting just spoke to her and she had to use it as the feature of the show. The paintings were donated by the son of Judith Beall. After the show the paintings will be preserved in the archives of the museum forever. Judith Beall’s brother David was there and we were able to talk with him. The Beall family had a farm in Wexford, PA and commissioned Pappy to paint portraits of many of their horses, dogs and even them. He showed us a painting of himself at 7 years old. He remembered sitting for it while Pappy painted it. He asked Pappy if he could add a little horse on his tie and he did, he was so proud of the painting.
It was such an honor to see Pappy’s paintings behind glass at a museum. To me it validates how talented he was and helps give credibility to his art work and what we are doing to promote his collection. The exhibit will be on display through the end of 2025. If you are able to make the trip to Lexington to see it, I highly recommend it!”
